APEX

I'm new to Apex so maybe I just don't know where to look
I need to replace an old mainframe application; the data is being moved into Oracle.
The old mainframe screens display 1 record per screen with about 60 fields on the screen, ie the entire screen is filled. Most of these fields can be updated on line.
When I look at examples and tutorials for Apex, I see things that are linear - one record going across horizontally or going up and down vertically - or screens that display a table with multiple records. I see examples where the screen scrolls to the right and left or up and down if all the fields don't fit on the page, but really want to be able to display all or most of the fields on a single record at the same time.
Any thoughts? I'm using Application Express 4.1.1
