APEX Plugins - What is the future? Does death of the JAVA plugin have impact?

After reading a story on Oracle pulling the plug on the JAVA plug-in, this comment caused me concern:

"With modern browser vendors working to restrict and reduce plug-in support in their products,"

The article continues with quotes that all seem to say the browser applications will no longer support plug-ins.

Does that impact the APEX plug-ins? Or - maybe it doesn't matter?
