apex applications are limited to an intranet or they can be on internet ?

I am working at a companey which is using an erp based on oracle 10 g data base.
My companey is planning to design some applications using APEX, can theses applications be places on internet so that customers can acesses it?
my main quesion are apex applications limited to an intranet or they can be acessed over internet also (by enabling security and checking for a login)?
