APEX 4.0 - Not possible to display HTML in display only items

It is no longer possible to display html code in "Display Only" items. It was possible in 3.2. It should also be possible to display html code when a text field is conditionally read-only. There should be settings to allow this. At the moment I can't even think of a workaround to fix a 'broken' application of mine. Any ideas?
