Any point running ASM on VMWare ESX with vmdk's on SAN?

Kirk BrocasAug 12 2009
Hi folks,

We are running Oracle 11.1.0.6 with ASM storage. The 2 ASM Data groups contain a bunch of virtual disks which map back to LUNs on a SAN.

Do we really need ASM, or would we be better off, in terms of simplicity, using fewer bigger luns and mounting them directly to the file system and using standard storage methods?

What benefits, if any, would we be losing?

I imagine if one virtual disk got corrupted then ASM would protect from that with its failure groups, but how likely is that?

Welcome your opinions.

Cheers
Kirk
