Antivirus software for Solaris

807557Feb 17 2008 — edited Apr 7 2008
Can anybody briefly explain what type of security measures must be taken on a regular x86 desktop or notebook with Solaris installed regarding viruses.
What kind of anti-virus software is currently out there? What are your recommendations?

There are no solaris virus's. Hence no anti virus software is necessary.

The only exception is where you have a server hosting something a samba smb share. There you might want to install software to look for PC virus's that happen to be living on the samba share.

Thats not to imply that you don't need to take security precautions such as firewalls and turning off unnessary services to avoid being hacked. But you are safe from viruses as such.

Thanks for the information.
Another good reason to go for Solaris.
It saves both money and computer performance by not needing to install antivirus software.

Are you sure about this?

If you're sever is Solaris and it's serving files to Windows machines then you should still use an anti-virus program on the Windows side. Saving a file to Solaris may not damage the Solaris machine but when another Windows users opens it on their desktop, then what?

There are a few anti-virus apps that will run natively on Solaris but if you're sharing files you should still use something on either the client or the server.

I've been researching such a product myself. I have Solaris 10 08/07 5.10 on a X86 platform. There are two I'm aware of see below:

www.Clamav.com
www.Avast.com
www.f-prot.com

Our local expert uses clamav however I'm going to try both programs, clamav and avast. I will report my findings on this website. Note it was not easy finding a virus scanning program. Warning Mcafee and Norton have no products although there website would lead you to beleive they have such a product. I have personally called each company and neither can support Solaris and did not even know what a Sun Operating System was.

Goodluck with your inquiry.

Ok forget CLAMAV, my expert could not get it working. Will let you know about AVAST. Having some problems but have not given up. Currently there is a file missing in the setup application, working to get it from AVAST.

So far to load the AVAST Virus Def file has prooven not possible. I'm still woring with AVAST but I'm loosing hope.

So far I've had to load 2 additional files which I had to search for on the internet (WGET and md5sum) since their scripts uses these applications to (WGET) get the update and (md5sum) verify the size sent was the size recieved with no changes. I'm sure Solairs has there form of this app already built into their OS, not sure why AVAST just did not use the Solairs organic apps but I'm moving on.

Will keep you posted. Note this is a beta version of AVAST since they really don't have anything specifically for Solaris.

If I don't make much progress on update the virus def file I'm going to call it quits and find another Virus Program to use. Will update all as changes occur.

Forget AVAST. It was obvious I was beta testing their product and I was running out of time after 6 weeks. I might have got it working but they constantly said ok load this and try it and nothing worked for the wget program. I do have a program that works, http://www.cybersoft.com/cs_products/vstk_p.php

Loaded it easily and ran it against a test file and it caught it. Save your self alot of time and go with the above link.

Apparently I forgot to check this thread.
Thanks for all the feedback.
In my case the question was when you use the computer as a stand alone desktop, so not really as a server.

I have multiple setups. I use it in a stand-alone enviorment and another as a Server. It scans traffic as well as files loaded onto the system through a mounted volume such as a CD.
