ANALYZE TABLE COMPUTE STATISTICS

Hi All,

I am looking at an sql statement,

ANALYZE TABLE TABLE_NAME COMPUTE STATISTICS;

I searched on net and came to know that oracle optimizer uses this statistics and is used in performance tuning. Still, I am not properly convinced with answer. Can you please explain me this practically ?
