An SCN for the entire database and different SCNs for datafiles?

DB Version:11g

I always thought that there is one unique SCN for the entire database.
A quote from the link below like
After a checkpoint completes, Oracle stores the SCN individually in the control file for each datafile

What does this mean? There is an SCN for the entire database and there are individual SCNs for each datafiles?
