Alternatives to XMLBeans and JAXB?

Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives to XMLBeans and Sun's RI of JAXB?
We need a JDK 1.3 solution and XMLBeans only works with 1.4.
Sun's RI of JAXB seems pretty slow. Are there any other (working) implementations that might be faster?
I've also tried Enhydra Zeus, but it doesn't handle our xsd correctly.
