alternatives to APEX for PL/SQL web development?

625858Feb 28 2008 — edited May 16 2011
I don't really "get" APEX.
1) The application interface is rather unsightly
2) you have to develop in 2 different places (some in PL/SQL and some cryptic cobbling of page layout in the browser) PL/SQL developers want to develop in PL/SQL.
3) APEX produces web 1.0 pages, but I want to produce the next generation of interactive web pages (RIA - rich internet applications)
4) APEX masks all the web part of developing web apps. To create web 2.0 apps from the database, you have to be able to work with both the database and the web. APEX seems to limit your web development capability to what it can do (which is restrained, to say the least).
5) by Oracle's own marketing admission, APEX is a departmental solution.
...the list can go on and on...but I'll jump to my point

It seems there are a lot of people interested in the concept of developing rich internet applications directly from the Oracle database, but APEX gets the attention because it is the only game in town. (Forget about JAVA and .Net - those are relics from the web 1.0 days) Does anyone know of something that can produce more sophisticated, rich web 2.0 applications from the Oracle database?

otherwise I'm sure there are a few APEX die hards out there that will try to "enlighten" me on APEX. uggh.
