altering unique index to add a column

i am on 11g

As found on community , i renamed the Old unique index to a some other name.

created a new index with the new column ,

is it that we have to do something for it to take effect?

And now when i am trying to drop the old index is is giving me the error

ORA-02429: cannot drop index used for enforcement of unique/primary key

how to get around this error?
