Agent Outbound Communication - Port?? Network Architecture??

980427Apr 8 2013 — edited Apr 8 2013
I have what might be somewhat of a stupid question due to my lack in knowledge of network communication.

I know that by default installation, the Standalone Agent operates on port 20910. That means to me that if Source IP (such as my laptop running Studio) wants to communicate with the Agent, the Server upon which the Agent is installed needs to have port 20910 Open (from a firewall perspective).

But how about Agent Outbound communication? Does the Agent operate Outbound from 20910? Does that even make sense? Again my lack of knowledge in Network Communications. I know that the Agent is a JVM, but for example if the Agent needs to speak with an Oracle DB on a Remote Server, the only thing I have to make sure that is open is the Oracle DB's port on that Remote Server.

I guess my question is about the Architecture of Outbound Communication for the ODI Agent and how that impacts network configuration, such as firewalls. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks
