Advice needed for Backup and Restore time estimation

Pete_Sg1Jul 8 2014 — edited Jul 14 2014

DB version: 11.2

Platform: RHEL 6.2

We use EMC DataDomain to back up our DBs. We have a 20TB database.

For this DB , We take one LEVEL 0 backup on Sundays and LEVEL 1 differential incremental backup for all the remaining days.

Level0 (Full) backup takes 6 hours on sunday night

Level1 (Differential Incremental) backup takes 1 hour for the remaining days

Application team wants to know , if the DB is lost on Friday 2PM, how long will it take to restore & recover the DB to that point (Friday 2PM).

I used the rule, The Max Restore Time = 2.5 times of Bakcup time . Is that a proper estimation ? They just want a rough estimate time.

To answer Application team's question on how long it will take to restore&recover DB if it lost on Friday 2pm, the Minimum time would be:

        6 hours to restore full bkp from sunday

        +

        4 hours ( Duration of Incremental backup on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

        +

        2 hours roughly to apply 50 archive logs generated after LEVEL1 backup from Thursday night till 2PM friday

        =======

        15 Hours Minimum

The Max Restore & Recover time = 2.5 times of 15 = 37.5 hours

Is my rough estimation shown above OK ?
