Advantage of SCAN over VIP

DB Version:11.2.0.2
Platform : Solaris 10

One of our application's middleware is using 10.2.0.4 oracle client. So, they can only use JDBC url with VIP. I asked them to upgrade their oracle client to 11.2 so that they could SCAN name in their JDBC url.

I understand that both SCAN and VIP offers equal level of High Availabilty. Is there any extra advantage that SCAN offers for applications ?
