Advantage of ON PREBUILT in Materialized views

Can someone please provide me the advantages of using the ON PREBUILT option over regular method in REFRESH COMPLETE materialized views

I am new to this Mviews and my requirement is to reduce the load on DB in the environment where both the production and MViews refresh is happening in the same DB.

If you have any other idea of refreshing the Mviews in such a scenario please provide your valuabale comments
