ADF compatibility VS JAVA compatibility

Hi all,

I have a general question,If i going to start a new project.I have a confusion over development whether to start development in ADF or JAVA.

If it is ADF, why we use ADF instead of Java?

If it is Java, why we use Java?

What is the compatibility between these two?
