ADF 12C - Using Coherence Cache behind the scenes?

ADF Version: 12.2.1.2

We have added AppDynamics monitoring to our application servers and on inspecting the transactions showing up there, I see that all our SharedApplication Module access for LOVs seem to be connecting to a coherence cache.

Does that mean that ADF inherently uses the Coherence Cache underneath?
