Adding a list server to my domain - mail server won't sent to it

I've added a dedicated list server to my domain so a new machine is listserv.domain. Added an internal MX record so sending mail from any other Solaris server the mail makes it to the new server. But if I send it from our regular mail server it gives the following message

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'root' on 5/7/2008 9:33 AM
The Sun SMTP Transport service failed to deliver the message to this recipient on server kite.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca for the following reason: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: root@listserv.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca

seems to me that our mail server is taking everything for the whole domain. Any ideas on where to look in the configuration?
