AD provisioning for user who already exist in AD

I have the AD Connector installed and provisioning, however for existing users in my AD, the user is created in OIM and the create user AD task fails with user already exists - expected. However, Subsequent udates to the user also fail for users who are both in OIM and AD... albeit the AD user was a pre-existing user and not actually created via OIM. I figured now that the user exist in OIM, OIM would be able to handle updates.

What's the best advice/approach to take where OIM will manage an existing AD environment. I did a one time AD target recon didn't seem to help much.
