Accessing Oracle ERP over the internet

Hallo!I am an Oracle Newbie studying for the Oracle 10g Administration course.

I am just curious.Assume that an organization’s Oracle ERP (using Apps like E-Business Suite,Discoverer,Siebel) is only accessible within the LAN but the organization wants to enable access of the ERP by end users remotely over the internet.

What would be involved in achieving internet access of the ERP.Would it require e.g. that you assign public IPs to the servers;use of VPNs configured for each end user?Obviously one requires to have the ERP behind a Firewall.Which Oracle Firewall and other internet security solutions are available?

Please give me a very brief summary on what this would entail?
