Acceptable Latency

Hi all,

I have just been asked a hyperthetic question within the office with regards to implementing Oracle RAC.

We are running 11.2.0.2 on Red Hat Linux.

Currently single database using partitioning and Oracle DataGuard.

I have been asked given that we have 4 data centers with varying network latency would Oracle RAC be implementable across any of these configurations.

DC1 - Local Office
DC2 - 25 Miles away - Latency 2ms
DC3 - 46 Miles away - Latency 2ms
DC4 - 435 Miles away - Latency 16ms.

Having looked through various sites and documentation the most I have come up with is "Ensure your latency is adequate".

But what constitutes adequeate to prevent a split brain etc.

I know that extended geographic have not been done over 75+ miles so DC4 is pretty much out of the equation but would 2ms be adequate latency to run a RAC extended cluster over?

If so then I am guessing we are then into the location/cost arguments as DC1 and DC2 locations will probably be better than DC2 and DC3 with regards to cost.

Working our way from West to east You reach DC1 followed by DC2 followed by DC3. so DC2 is basically in the middle give or take a couple of miles of DC1 and DC3.

I think that hyperthetically it is possible. Cost wise is a different matter :o)

Thanks for your thoughts :o)
