about date storages

Hi Experts,

we are getting files from different locations and we need to store in a unique format, and when i using to_char(date,'yy-mm-dd') in insert statement, it showing some errors.

could please tell me oracle only stores dates in own format only ?

this all functions are for use for displaying records in what ever format we need?
