A question about schema

I am intrigued by the term 'schema' in Oracle. It seems that it is just a synonym of 'user'. Is it just a conceptual term and can be substituted by 'user' in a sense ? I am confused because I've never seen the keyword synonym appear in any sql statements. Thks.
