4.2.0.17 crashing with APPCRASH in sqldeveloper64W.exe

trying to use SqlDeveloper 4.2.0.17 under MS Windows 7 64 bit, we get frequent crashes.

The error reports APPCRASH in sqldeveloper64W.exe, module StackHash_b903, exception code c0000374.

Any suggestions how to get around this?
