12c RAC: ASM vs. Shared File System

MaryYApr 19 2017 — edited Apr 19 2017

Hello,

If I could just pow-wow with you guys a moment...

YES I agree ASM is the best thing since sliced bread.  It can make managing database files much easier, greatly improves file I\O, great redundancy etc.

However, in an instance where you have a SAN with flash storage (that can be setup as a shared file system), with incredible data access performance and redundancy; being objective guys, would not ASM add an unneeded extra layer of overhead in this particular RAC environment?

I am asking what is wrong with just using a "Shared File System" option for RAC rather than ASM in this particular context.

Thanks guys!

Mary
