11g Question: Stand alone database vs. single node cluster

CowTown_dbaMar 12 2012 — edited Mar 13 2012
We are preparing to create a new 11.2.0.3 database that will eventually become an 11.2.0.3 clustered database. Our host server(s) are IBM pSeries hardware running AIX 6.1. We will be using just Oracle Clusterware, and not IBM HACMP. We also plan to use ASM storage for the database. The plan is eventually to have a 2 or 3 node cluster, but currently we only have one AIX server available to us.

My question is regarding our initial approach to the setup.

Is it a better practice to install the Oracle database as a stand alone database first, and then convert the database to a RAC cluster once we have hardware for the second node? Or would it be better to create the cluster with just one node, and install and configure Grid Clusterware for a single node cluster and then add the second node when hardware becomes available?

I apologize if my explanation is not very clear. Any and all advice will be considered and appreciated. Thank you.
