Minutes

Leo summarized as follows: We've been discussing moving Java ME forward and trying to see what traction we could get inside the EC. There is very little interest in the EC to do this. But I think there's still way to use what's good in Java ME and keep Java relevant on embedded. It seems that lack of current interest, the increase in power for next generation devices and the modularization in Java 9 are not going to justify the investment to have Java ME as a separate platform - no EC member has shown interest in having that bundled with or sold to any HW platform.

So, my suggestion is to try and get the good parts of Java ME into Java SE 10+ - things like Midlet Lifecycle, application provisioning and APIs for board functionalities could live on in Java 10+ as modules or as Java SE JSRs. To minimize attrition, we could have these APIs launched as an independent JSR, led by someone (V2COM, initially) together with Oracle, to protect Oracle's IP rights and guarantee we are doing a good job. The RI/TCK could follow the Java EE route and be done in Eclipse.

This way, we keep Java relevant on embedded and Oracle still has possibilities to use this on its future endeavors.

Next Steps

Leo to follow up with a draft of slides to present at the January EC F2F meeting.

Next meetings will be third Wednesday of the month moving forward; February 21, March 14 and May 16.
