CDE, realplayer 8, ticlts, and rpcbind fun and frustration

807559Feb 11 2004
My system is a Sun model 60 (2 x 400, 1GB) running Solaris 9
-SunOS suni 5.9 Generic_112233-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60 -

It has recently (three weeks ago) had it's ip address, subnet, etc changed with a change in ISP, but I used the sys-unconfig process and nothing odd came of
it. There are one physical and four logical network connections set up using
ifconfig in rc2.d.

Yesterday after watching the sun announcements using Mozilla 7.1 and RP 8.0
real player refused to quit. I didn't think enough and /etc/reboot-ed but when
the system came up I got:

Feb 11 13:18:26 suni server[1016]: [ID 514559 daemon.error] svc_tp_create: Could not register prog 300598 vers 1 on udp

Logging in via a failsfe or console session and starting rpcbind appears to
"fix" the problem but leaves the questions unanswered plus the screen cannot
be unlocked once locked.

Further "ps -elf" does not work as I expect it to. For example the running
apache processes (which work fine) do not show up. The display appears
to be truncated with each open window showing up but things like sendmail
disappearing. Even though it is running.

Anyone have an answer? (I'm currently /etc from tape and plan to run
a comm to see what changed... )
