Did you downloaded the full zip file and unzip it into an empty folder? In a previous message you mentioned you tried to update a previous version. Before you unzip and start the new install, you should ensure you do not have an existing :\Documents and Settings\<user>Application Data\SQL Developer\system1.5.1.54.40 folder.

This is happening on multiple machines?

From what I can tell, this error is generally an issue with Windows when there have been changes to the drives that are visible and something is expecting to find a drive or directory somewhere and that doesn't exist. For example, card readers or iPods mounted as disks might be associated with something.

SQL Dev is probably hitting it because the calls we make to get the list of directories, etc. is causing Windows to scan for this missing mounts.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but from what I can tell, it's a problem with the machine configuration :(

I've been giving this a little more thought, and I'm wondering if you could provide a couple of values for some system properties (available under Help|About, on the Properties tab).

ide.pref.dir
ide.user.dir
ide.work.dir
user.dir

Also, do you have any remote drives mounted?

Perhaps I can figure out what might be different in your environment from mine, and see if I can track down some additional information.

John,

I am seeing this same issue here on multiple (older) Windows 2000 machines.
The one thing they have in common is a floppy disk drive.

Once I insert a floppy disk into the drive, the error goes away and
SQL Developer starts up. This behaviour has begun with the version 1.5
of SQL Developer. Earlier versions are unaffected.

Hope this helps.

Armin

Addendum: PCs with Windows XP and a floppy drive seem to be unaffected as well.

Yep

It's right.
With a floppy into the floppy disk drive the error goes away and
SQL Developer starts up

Thanks.

Had same bug yesterday with full Windows version of 1.5.1. I've got the no-jre version and got the last version of Java SDK from Sun - 1.6.0 u7. SQL Developer still checks the floppy at startup but it doesn't produce the error message anymore. So probably the error has to do with the underlying Java VM.

Has anyone worked out an answer/workaround to this one? I see it's quite an old post but there don't seem to be any others on the subject. I'm having the same problem with the latest sql developer. I've tried three different computers (all on win2kpro though!) with and without importing old settings, with and without deleting previous settings folders! I've tried it from a local drive as well as a key, but no joy. The other thing I've noticed is that if I import old connections and then close sql developer they disappear again next time I open it. I'd be very glad if someone could help me figure out what's going on!

Thanks!

No takers, eh?

Well, I have a workaround now and it seems to work OK to allow me to run SQL Developer from a USB key on Win2K Pro so I'll describe it in case it's helpful to someone else:

Start SQL Developer, ignore all the requests for a disk in the A Drive, create a new connection. Close SQL Developer.

Plug the key drive into another computer that has a different OS on it that plays more nicely with SQL Devloper (Windows Vista, in my case) and import all the connections from your old version

Find your Application Data folder on C: drive of the Vista computer and open the subfolder "SQL Developer\system1.5.1.54.40\o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.0.22.49.42"

Open the folder E:\home1\USERS\<yourusername>\Application Data\SQL Developer\system1.5.1.54.40\o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.0.22.49.42
and transfer all the files from the local version to the key drive version

Now transfer all the entire SQL Developer folder from the Vista's C Drive to the key

Return to the Windows 2000 machine and transfer the SQL Developer folder from the key drive to your application data folder on the win2k box's local drive (obviously you'll have to do this on every other machine you use, which is less than ideal but I haven't discovered a workaround for that bit yet!)

Start SQL Developer and Bob should be your uncle...
