Ok, I downloaded the Oracle 11g client and selected "Administrator" during installation.
How do I launch the management console? (is it a script in <ORACLE_CLIENT_HOME>/bin ?)

If you're talking about java-based Enterprise Manager, it's no longer a component of 11g.

Yes, this is what I was referring to?
So now it's all via web based EM console?

Yes. I still have problems to get web-based console running on the Windows platform.

Ok, it looks like the EM is a "licensable" option... So I won't be able to use it.

I take that back. The Database tab on the upper right has all the features I'm looking for.

Hi,
I have just installed the 11g client and can't find the Management Console mentioned in the installer Administrator option anywhere. Where is the 'Database tab on the upper right' you are referring to? I have found the client enterprise manager console to be a great tool since 8i days. I know it was degraded somewhat in 10g but surely it has not been removed completely.
Thanks,

This is a shame. I much prefer the java client version compared to the web-based version.
The old java version found in 8i was more reliable and available than the web-based version.
Was this a marketing / management (PHB) decision to do this at Oracle?

Well, it is certainly different, but really, pretty much everything that you need to do that you used to do with the standalone Java version you can do with this web-based version. I'll take it.

Yes, the 11g Database Control supposedly now has all of the java applet Oracle Enterprise Management Console Functions and Features but that is just not the case. Major missing feature is Navigation Tree to any Oracle Database that you needed to manage. Very easy to open up branches in tree and see database configuration settings, user info, schema, etc very quickly. Web Database Control is slow, clunky, hard-to-navigate and simply missing the very important and useful function mentioned above. Oracle needs to bring back the Enterprise Management Console java app.. I have discussed this at OracleWorld in SF today with several OEM Oracle reps and unfortunately they showed zero interest is such a request.. Apparently it is not in the interest of the large Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control product..

I think it's just part of the move away from fat clients.
If the current web-based client is a bad design, then it is a bad design. Oracle will need to continue usability and performance testing and getting feedback from the user community to make it work. And, just like JDev is written in Java, I think we will continue to see more and more fusion/middleware-based tools.
It's just the new world order; I don't think the old OEM Java client is coming back (unless enough people complain

Agreed. They would be better off adding a management plugin to SQL Developer.

to me one of the points of thr old thick client was to access multiple databases and verions and platforms - I guess its the grid control that should be used. and correct me if I am wrong but the 11g client is for tools such as lmviewer, wrap etc.
