I have blogged about this on Radio Free Tooting. Somebody posted a link to the AppForge article on Wikipedia but it still seems that nobody actually knows what is going on.

Well there is a bit of a hole in the Fusion strategy for mobile applications. Or maybe larry just likes the domain name....

Hi APC

I'm the one who started this topic who to say the least is pretty p*ss*d off at the behavior of both the recently "gone **** up" Appforge and the purchaser of same Oracle.

Anyone who has developed an application using Appforge Crossfire cannot now deploy their application to mobile devices.

I am stunned that the second biggest software company in the world appears to be buying IP addresses to add traffic to their web site. Perhaps they should use the word "***" to add more hits..

Maybe the software press can have a field day on this one....

Cheers

My company have used appforge since 2000!

We have about 9 applications used throughout the public sector that uses Appforge's client - we are now up the creek without a paddle - we did have about 50 licenses that we had bought but not activated which we assumed would allow us to weather the storm until Appforge found a buyer - but oh no - appforge's website crashed and then redirected to Oracle!

I do still have contact with our Appforge account manager and he told me Oracle has bought the company and they have hired most of the developers but sadly will be unlikely to carry on selling the appforge product set :-(

I am aware however that Appforge did sell client licenses for about $1500 that did not require activation and were designed for VAR's and ISV's to bundle the client with their software and then tell Appforge of the sale afterwards.

I wonder if Oracle would sell this activation free license to the hundreds of Appforge ISV's and VAR's out there who need this client.

I have spoken to Oracle UK and they know nothing of this acquisition and you are correct in stating there is absolutely nothing on the Oracle website to explain what is happening!

If anyone reads this from Oracle - what is going on? and what are you going to do to help the appforge community? perhaps make it open source ;-)

Take care,

M

We're in the same boat. We have an application on EPOD pocket PCs for shipping trucks and we're sitting on about 40 licenses that we cannot activate.

I've left numerous messages with Oracle acquisitions, but no returned calls and as the one poster above, nobody at Oracle whom I've spoken with can confirm/deny the acquisition of Appforge.

We're currently looking Syware to develop a Visual CE solution until we can figure out what's the story with Oracle/Appforge.

Anymore info from any of you?

Thanks

Oracle has confirmed acquisition of AppForge intellectual property, but has yet to announce anything else.

Well at least someone from Oracle has confirmed the rumor, now hopefully they can "honor" any licensing agreements that were currently held with Appforge.

The article on my blog has turned into a minor resource of links on this issue. I'm not an AppForge user myself, so I take no responsibility or credit for this.

Yet another risk of using COTS over internal development. These various licensing schemes only serve the vendors and leave their customers to clean up the mess once the vendor sells out. Imagine a world once the crack-pot vision of SOA is implemented. Any complex system will depend on a host of services owned by a variety of vendors spread across geography, each going belly-up or merging with another vendor, or constantly changing its licensing arrangements in a constant chase for the next buck. Nothing will ever work again for anyone two days in a row. It is already a monumental task keeping up with all the various licensing arrangements and renewals even on a good day.
Imagine the day your car won't even start because the license expired for the electronic ignition. Will you have to junk your car? This is not far fetched! I have a true story about an HVAC company down the road that had to scrap its entire manufacturing facility because the software used to run it expired and the software company went belly up. Too expensive to write their own software. Not very "green" either. Thank goodness our mechanical and electronic engineers (true engineers) did not do this to the country. It took short-sighted software vendors to bring us down.
Where have all the CIO's gone in all this? This is an important subject to address that effects all major corporations and Gov't. Likely, to their next higher paycheck. Actually doing something about a problem is so "last century". They much prefer the next shiny new widget and a quick path to their next paycheck. We in the trenches who actually have to do work always have to clean up their mess.
Perhaps customers need to unite and fight back against this trend and force vendors to no longer put their entire IT infrastructure investment and mission critical applications at peril. We need to twist the arms of our CIOs and management to actually do something for a change. No one should be able to have their cake and eat it too. Vendors should be allowed to protect their product but the customers should be allowed to protect their businesses and our government functions that their products were aquired to support.

Hi there,

I am setting up a knowledge base site, and I like the Appforge technical support site for ticket and knowledge base software. Do you know the software supplier that I can contact them? Thanks.
