Universal edition choke on en-GB browser, core dumped, ORA-07445, _npierr+4

Environment:
XE version : Universal
OS : Any
Browser : Any
Browser language : en-gb
Symptoms:
While using Application Express, every so often, randomly, Firefox asks user to download "f" or "www_flow_accept" file, or when browsing with IE - it displays "IBMPC/WIN_NT-8.1.0" on empty page/frame.
After that, apex freezes for about 40 seconds.
On the server side, core gets dumped and ORA-07445 (_npierr+487) gets reported in alert log and trace files as shown in my other thread: "Beta 3 Bug: using database link freezes apex and xdb" http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=363310
Workaround:
Set browser to en-US language settings.
Note: If you have "User Agent Switcher" Firefox extension, default user agent string does not follow the language settings change. You should de-install or re-install the extension.
Now, this workaround looks fine for me during development, but I can't possible tell the users to change their browsers language settings. Even more I can't have server posing as sitting duck to be frozen every so often with anyone with "wrong" language settings.
Can this please be fixed or some other workaround found.
I haven't tried yet, but if western version has no problems with this then it might be better workaround. But not for long. Universal version is a must in my case.

UPDATE:
I have just tried western version.
Unfortunately, the problem remains the same.
Definitively, apex doesn't work with en-gb browser.
It doesn't matter if you browse locally or remotely, I forgot to mention.
So, anyone with en-gb settings would crash my applications.
It doesn't matter database links or not, it happens anywhere, even when just surfing home page, before logon screen. Creating db link and testing it is just the most successful and consistent way I found to produce the error.
So the environment is now:
XE version : Universal & western
OS : Any
Browser : Any
Browser location : local & remote
Browser language : en-gb
Only user469099 and segafredozanetti complained so far for this!
Are we the only apex users in the UK ?
(Although they seem not to be from the UK.)
Anyone else seeing this?

We are tracking this. I will add this new information to the bug report we have for this. We need to be able to reproduce the problem consistently to debug. This new information will help. Thanks for your perseverance

mcgoran - can you confirm that you can reproduce this in any browser, and not just Firefox ?

Yes.
Only, Firefox shows download dialog box
while IE displays "IBMPC/WIN_NT-8.1.0"
but the core dump / log / trace files / 45sec lock / are the same.
Both browsers works perfectly straight even without reseting when language settings changes to en-us.
I even produced the same errors in wmvare 4.5.2 with plain XP SP1 with lforumID=251

(once again to try to post the end of message)
I even produced the same errors in wmvare 4.5.2 with plain XP SP1 with last sec patches dated August 2005 and installing XE on it. Of course Regional and language options are set to GB. You should be able to do the same.

Hi,
searched the forum for a while and found your message.
Have the same bug - I am using the Universal Edition on (german) Windows XP SP2 with IE 6. A page in my app has a submit button which causes an action using a db-link. Before switching to XE production version I used the Beta2 and this error did not occur.
Your workaround works now for me - but as you stated it's not really a solution. Hope we'll get a fix soon.

Hi All,
Have been trying to figure this one out for 3 days. I have had identical crashes in the shared server processes as you have described - mainly when using database links to Oracle 9i or 8.1.7 databases.
Your workaround also works for me - don't know how you figured it out but thanks alot.

Must say, despite finding this "workaround" the crashes still happen esspecially when using db links to 8.1.7. In all other circumstances the workaround work "almost" flawlessly.
I had few pc machines where I tested XE and on some of them te problem almost never occured. So finding workaround was just matter of what's different comparing to machines where problem occured more frequently.

No, VMware is not a problem. This happens regardless machine being physical or virtual.

Hi,
Did you find a "real" workaround to this problem ?
I have exactly the same message (IBMPC/WIN_NT-8.1.0) and error (ORA-07445) in alert_xe.log and setting the browser language to en-us is not a suitable workaround for all the users of our application ...
Do you have any clue now since this is an old problem (already existed in beta 3 version) ?
Thanks a lot for your collaboration, best regards.

I still use XE and apex for my private projects so this was fix for me.
Therefore I haven't pressed this further.
But, as I stated it as well, it is not really "the solution".
We still wait for official solution.
We uploaded trace/log files few months ago when requested.
I haven't checked apex on other editions and haven't checked version 2.2.
