Just imagine if everyone that wants to grab attention
in this forums uses urgent in the subject
line. Do you really consider that the way to go?

@OP: basically, what everyone's trying to say is... imagine if you were on line in a bank waiting to deposit your check... and some guy comes in after double-parking his car at the entrance of the bank screaming... URGENT! I need this check deposited... I have my mortgage to pay, grandma to feed, cat to get neutered... It is time-critical!

i think one of two things would happen... either he'll get arrested or the people from the funny farm will come get him. and that analogy is with bank tellers as employees getting paid... NO ONE here is getting paid. if you are willing to pay us, then we'll probably think about letting that "URGENT" word slide... ;)

yeah, but if they offer to pay us, they'll probably want our bank account numbers to deposit the money.

well, I'm done checking those special emails. time to go to the bank, pay the cat, and grandma neutered.

WAW, what a wonderful attitude some people have arround here!!

Let me get this straight to everyone...

If you are talking about "yourself" in defining the meaning of URGENT, then let me remind you, every person is writting his/her own URGENT with their OWN definition,
An urgent could mean, i might loose my job if dont get a solution, or my boss could give me a comment about it.
either way, its up to the poster to define URGENT.
The reason is because there is no standard for URGENT

And normally when i surf forums, i first look at the the ones labled URGENT first because it 'might' mean that its really urgent,
and since people reply just 'for the heck of it' then replying to an URGENT thread or not urgent, its still going to be a reply...

Another thing, i know how you and many others have other things to do other than reading my life story in a thread.
I normally ask people (and others do the same) not to tell me the story behind what they are trying to do, just tell me what the problem is and i will be happy to help you.
In other words, if i write 2 paragraphs telling you what i want, i will less likely to get responses (not to mention its URGENT)
I need to make as much possible replies i could get!

Lack of information??
I dont see hows that possible, not to mention someone had managed to answer my question from the begining...?

And its not your business if im here for an Oracel or SQL Server related question, i just about an SQL Statement... that works in both places
it might be in a little different syntax (for this situation) but im not a straight forward person,
i can logically understand other sytaxes,
and just to be clear on this part (since someone needs 10 explanasion to know whats going on) im not saying im smart, but for a simple issue like this, i dont need to be a Oracle or SQL Server Guru to understand it!!

I asked:

BTW, i dont see how rude that could be, could you plz explain!?

You answered:
Then continue to use the word in your posts. I for one will be ignoring them.

seriously, what kind of answer is this?
this was my first post in this forum
maybe you could have said to your self "maybe that person doesnt really know what URGENT might mean when included in threads??"

It really wont hurt anyone to have told me why (in a good manner way) URGENT might not be a good word to be used in threads...
It could have ended by the first couple replies,
but people some people have few hundereds of posts thinks that they own the world!

Grow Up!

Regards

So you considered my answer not as good mannered?

Grow Up!

You have obviously your own definition in good manners, which I don't share. Good luck with that attitude.

Thanks for stopping by.

you're not helping your case with that post. true, I was able to answer your question, but that doesn't mean that you provided enough info on the first try. and I tend to ignore posts that I know aren't oracle specific (but having never used sql server, I wasn't aware of the "datevalue" function).

and when I answered, I chose to ignore the "urgent" in part because it was your first post. but I also wrote the following -

next time, leave the word "urgent" out of your message (header and body), and you'll actually get better, faster responses. also, try reading the Forums Etiquette post at the top of the forum

so, if you want to get help in the future, you'd be wise to change your attitude, listen to ALL the advice given, accept that fact that the people giving answers are turned off by the word "urgent", and remember to thank people graciously. otherwise, you might not get far here. and I'll turn on you just as quick as anyone else (if not quicker) -

When you've been around these forums as long as I and some others have, you soon get to realise that

URGENT actually means "I'm Stuck. I want help now".

Of course if you're that stuck you should be using the proper support channels.

Putting the word URGENT in your thread title leads to lots of negative responses, as you have seen. This is a good reason for not doing so.

In general you're better off giving your thread a meaningful title (ie one that decsribes the problem) and posting as much relevant information as possible.

This will probably lead to a quicker response than if you type urgent in the subject line.

Also remember this is an oracle specific forum, so the asumption will be that
you are using an Oracle Database. Therefore if your question is not oracle specific, you should state this.

A couple of comments on this whole "urgent" issue.

A simple question, as you yourself stated in the subject, cannot and will never be urgent.

Claiming your problem as urgent says, rather arrogantly, that your (simple) problem warrants more attention than others' around here. And there are people who post real problems, complex problems. with a SR filed with Oracle Support, and then also post here looking for assistance. Without claiming that they deserve special treatment. Without claiming their problem as urgent.

And this is what really rubs me the wrong way. The arrogance and selfishness it takes to demand an "urgent" review and response to your posting - ignoring and discarding the problems of others here as meaningless in comparison to your problem.

This in a nutshell is what is the root cause of most of the political and other problems in the world. And then you question why we distest that? Look in the mirror mate.
