Given that 11g is on the near horizon, does anyone know (and can they say) if Express Edition part of the 11g line-up ?

PS. If mouths are still hushed, perhaps if the forum titled changed from "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition " to simply "Oracle Database Express Edition", we may draw our own conculsion.

There is not an official statement on the Oracle side, XE would of course follow it by some amount of time, just the way it has been.

" just the way it has been"
That's partly my point, there has only been one release of XE (ignoring the beta versions) and it came as an afterthought, rather than as part of the 10gR2 lineup.

The 11g release should be a pointer to the future of XE.
Firstly, while there has been beta testing of 11g, there's still the potential for new functionality to have issues. The original XE was built on a version of 10gR2 that had undergone multiple patchset/CPU fixes. Possible scenarios are an early 11gXE release with no patches (until 11gR2 or whatever) which could be risky, an early 11gXE release with subsequent patchset releases, or a delayed but more stable 11gXE release.
Secondly, if XE hasn't successfully achieved what Oracle intended, then there might not be an 11g release. 10gR1, for example, was released for Macs, but 10gR2 wasn't (although I've no idea whether this was for technical or business reasons or a combination)
I hope the 11g announcement will at least give a mention of XE plans (or that there is a separate announcement around the same time).

There's a sidepoint about the future of Apex (for example whether an 11g XE release would have a 'standard 3.0' Apex, possibly with a Database Management application built in, or stick with the dedicated 2.1 version, or go for a new 3.1 version).

Rumor has it that there will be an 11gXE with Apex 3.0 included.

Based on the previous experiences with XE I assume that the (lack of) patching policy will not change. I don't think they will wait for 11gR2, but perhaps for a patch or two for the 11g base release.

Just my 0.02 cents,

I understand your point of view, unfortunately I am not an Oracle representative and I can only trust the official statements. Rumors, as long as they remain as rumors, are just a way to fill a lack of information, and cannot be considered as official statements.

On the Mac side, it has not been oficially stated Oracle will dessuport Mac, it has only not planned a new software development for that platform.

If you want to hear another rumor XE won't disappear, and as previously stated it will integrate the latest APEX features. Right now it is supported, but not at the latest APEX release.

So the only alternatives we have right now is to wait for an official statement or run on rumors.

At this time, anything to do with Oracle 11g is still in beta and is covered under a 'non disclosure agreement'.

Reaching back into the discussion forum's early days, Oracle did say that "no patches or bug fixes would be released with XE - the community would need to wait until the next release of the core database" which implies (but does not commit) to an Oracle Database 11g Express Edition.

Rumours, though, abound. I have heard the same rumour as Dietmar.

At Oracle Develop Conference in Prague I asked Mark Townsend (Vice President of Database Product Management) who was product manager for 10g XE, this question.

Answer was that Oracle will wait for 11gR2 to realize new XE version.

Cheers!
