Can I use APEX as the front-end to the main Oracle database i.e using ODBC or OLE DB or something similiar? I need the data stored in my APEX applicaiton in the main database.

The purpose of ApEx is to give you exactly that - a front end for your data.

Actually what I meant was, can Oracle Database Express be used as the front-end to Oracle 10g.

Sure it can. That is exactly what I stated. ApEx is a part of 10g database and is meant to
give you a possibility to report, enter, evaluate your data residing in that database. See my
demo application for some examples:

Maybe there is a misunderstanding. Oracle APEX isn't bound to the Oracle XE database version. You can also install it into your regular main Oracle database. Then you are able to directly access your data.

Yes I thought that XE (Express) and Application Express (ApEx) were one in the same until very recently.
So I gather that XE (Express) is stand-alone and cannot access tables in Oracle 10g, where Application Express (ApEx) is a front-end tool allowing access to any database. Is this correct?

XE is Oracle Database Express Edition, which is the lowest level Edition of the Oracle Database (ie below Standard and Enterprise Editions). There was no XE edition prior to the current 10gR2 version.
Application Express (Apex) is a web-based application environment that can work on a 9iR2 or higher Oracle database (any Edition). Apex v2.1 came pre-installed with XE and is specific to that Edition. All other Editions require that Apex is explicitly installed. (It will be interesting to see if that is still the case with the next version of the Oracle db.)
There used to be an 'Oracle Express' OLAP tool, just to confuse things a bit more. APEX and XE are less confusing terms than 'Express'.
