Hi,
SU 3 is currently gated on two things:
1) Checking in a fix for this bug. We've checked in a fix to the 10.1.3 line that stops the incorrect file deletion from happening and dumps state when it would otherwise have occurred in the local history code. A bunch of us spent the last two days carefully auditing the local history code to try to find the bug and a solution that will also fix the underlying problem. We're doing this somewhat speculatively, because we're still unable to reproduce the bug at will (although we've verified that there are a number of problems in the implementation of local history, and one internal user has also run into the "random" deletion issue and provided us with a stack trace and other detailed diagnostic information clearly implicating local history).
2) QA testing. For SU3, we're planning to simultaneously update the 10.1.3 production zips to include the SU3 fixes so that new users get all of the SU3 fixes when they download the product for the first time. This involves a bit more preparation and testing than usual.
The update should be available soon.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Jerrek,
Thanks for the info. Given the symptoms I'm seeing, that is a plausible reason for running into the problem also.

My files are on the sam disk (windows, I've just one disk).
I switched off local history 2 days ago but I missed 2 files after that switch.
To be more precise I noticed I missed 2 files after that switch.
I'll keep You informed.
Tks

Hi Tuillo,
We'd definitely be interested in knowing for sure if those deletions happened before or after you switched off local history... as you mentioned, you weren't sure exactly when the deletions actually happened, only when you first noticed them. We strongly believe that local history is responsible for this problem.
Thanks,
Brian

I don't know exactely when the problem was produced, but only when it appears as "scheduled for removal"
The patch output doesnt't show that deletion.
I can only monitor the system.
Tks

Hi Tullio,
Any attempt to schedule a file for deletion will go via the API that causes the patch to log a message. If you see an unexpected delete scheduled file and no corresponding diagnostic output (as above), then probably the deletion happened during a previous jdev session.
Thanks,
Brian

I'm not sure if this adds anything to this discussion since it seems that, hopefully, the problem will be resolved with the next SU, but here it is anyway.
I've lost three .java files, all at different times. The first disappeared when it was not being edited. The second was open in JDev but that tab did not have focus. When I selected that tab, all the text was gone, but it still had the title of the missing file. The third, which occured a few minutes ago, also happened while the file was open in JDev, but was not the active tab. I selected the tab for the missing file, and all the code was still there. I'm not sure how XP is allowing files that are open (supposedly...not sure what JDev is doing) to be deleted...doesn't seem right.
And thanks to everyone posting on this thread...my co-workers were starting to think I was crazy and/or stupid since they have never had this problem, and I've only been using JDev for a couple of months. I have to say, I was starting to check out Eclipse after this!

Was Local History enabled when you observed these issues?
FWIW, JDeveloper does not take out a low level OS lock on files when they are open.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian. Yes, Local History was enabled. I found this forum after losing my third file today, and I disabled Local History after reading your recommendations. If I lose another I'll post it here. Thanks for the reply.

I can confirm I never loosed any file after I disabled local history.
Will that feature be reenabled in the future ?

We are currently testing a fix to the local history problem. Once we are sure that it solves the file deletion problem fully, the fix will be included in a Service Update for download through JDeveloper's Update Center.

In Service Update 3 (available now from check for updates), a fix is included that prevents local history from deleting user files. It is safe to reenable local history when SU3 is installed.
The underlying bug in local history means that in certain scenarios, your local history information will become invalid. In Service Update 4, we will include a fix that resolves the underlying bug.
Thanks,
Brian

I installed SU3 and I reactivated local history.
Should I remove the patch ?
I didn't do that and I got a very very long log.

Yes, you can remove the diagnostic patch.
