Hi all, this is my first post here (so I don't know if it's the proper place, but to try it is free. Sorry for any inconvenience).

Anybody, can confirm/explain why, one year after launch, there isn't one available download of Oracle Instant Client for Intel MacOS X?

Without it's impossible, for example, to compile PHP with OCI support under Intel MacOS X (native mode) and it's really a pain.

With PPC version existing since ages, wouldn't be absolutely easy to recompile that cool stuff for Intel MacOS X?

TIA and ciao, Eloy Lafuente :-)

I forwarded your post to the product management team. Their priorities obviously are based on customer demand; if they get enough requests for this, it could be in their plans.

Cheers, OTN

Where do I sign up? We're screaming for this. Must have made two dozen phone calls by now. It's one compile flag.... sheesh.

If it is all about numbers - then I too would like to request an Intel Mac version of the instant client - and perhaps one that is compatible with gcc 4.0

If management needs demand, then I'll add my request too. This is a major platform these days and only growing. Please, please release an Instant client for MacOS X on intel.

Hi again...

just to know a bit more... two months later... how is customer demand going...?

Have you searched for "macos x instant client intel" ?

Aren't PHP/Perl/Ruby applications enough?

I sincerely think it's a big mistake to don't offer native connectivity for MacOS X Intel users... of course, your mistake.

Some developers, like me, will stop developing/improving Oracle support in their applications just because they use MacOS X to develop. So, those applications won't run ok under Oracle, no matter where you deploy them.

With thousands of applications running natively under MacOS X Intel... isn't there (@ Oracle) able to recompile that tiny piece of software to run under Intels... sorry but I cannot believe it.

I'll email SJ right now! Ciao :-)

Yes, please release an Intel-native version of Oracle Instant Client.

Ruby on Rails on Mac OS X requires the use of the OCI driver, and an Intel-compiled binary is needed for this.

Rails development is done by a lot of Mac OS X users - please please support this.

I'd like to sign up for the intel version as well. Been trying for weeks to get the 9iR2 version to relink on Mac OS X 10.4.9 but to no avail. Having the client would be great but having the database would be better. Like stated earlier Oracle could 'loose' an important chunk of the Mac development comunity if popular alternatives (like MySQL) are there. A company like Oracle should understand this since large portions of the Applications technology stack are coming from the open source comunity. With MacBook Pro sales shooting throught the roof these days now would be the best time to have a port available.
I understand that Larry and the shareholders would like to see a bit more tangible proof of potential license sales but......

Sign me up, even though you could use the PPC version of the 10gR1 instant client and get it to run under "Rosetta" on a Macbook or Macbook Pro you won't be able to use ruby-oci8 since it cannot mix Intel and PPC code during build. Shame, cause this stops me from using RoR for example. Have to go thru Parallels and run , sigh, Windows or Ubuntu to get a running RoR environment against Oracle.

I absolutely require the instant client compiled for Intel MAC OS X. I have a hard time understanding why it is not.

At the ruby on rails conference. Nearly EVERYONE here has a mac. Most are probably intel. Sad that Oracle (IMHO the best RDBMS) is so crippled in Rails on Mac Intels.

I've been asking for this from our Oracle rep for a year and a half. I've almost consigned myself to the fact that it's never going to happen. Our company is actively looking at alternatives including EnterpriseDB. Bah, it's just a million dollars a year of lost revenue for you Oracle - you'll never miss it.
